Week in Review: You Call This May?

So on Friday I checked the forecast for the weekend.Forecast 4.29The flowers have still been beautiful–you look at someone’s garden and it looks like late April/early May: tulips, grape hyacinths, cherry and pear trees, lilacs, the very beginning buds of peonies and iris…but it’s actually 40 degrees and snowing.

The poor tulips got a little soggy.DSCN1026But it’s actually been a good week–I got a lot of stuff done, productive and fun. Here are a few of the highlights for this week’s Week in Review!

Week in Review

  1. Taught a lesson on clauses, sentence fragments, comma splices, and modifiers. Teaching grammar is actually remarkably difficult. Most students tend to either find it quite intuitive or find it very difficult and need a lot more instruction than I can fit into my class. I also got to do my favorite class activity: the cereal box analysis. (I have my students apply a lot of the rhetorical reading skills we’ve been practicing all semester on a box of generic brand crisp rice cereal. It’s a blast!)
  2. Had a lot of last-minute meetings and answered a lot of frantic emails from students finishing up (at least hopefully not just starting) their term papers.
  3. Enjoyed a lot of foods with higher-FODMAP ingredients I haven’t been able to enjoy in a while, due to finally being through the elimination phase. Details coming on Wednesday! My digestive system has been a real trooper–I started taking a daily probiotic, too, and I think that’s made a big difference.DSCN1044
  4. Went to two spin classes, although not on my usual schedule. I napped right through my Monday afternoon class, so I went to the 7:45am Tuesday class as an alternative. Both very challenging classes, but I felt really strong afterward!DSCN1025
  5. Speaking of exercise, I also posted the second episode in my Going Hungry series about my relationship with exercise through my eating disorder and today.
  6. Went to swing dance Wednesday night. Always a highlight of my week. Took some video this week. Check out Aja and Chris’s beautiful swing out form in a little candid filming I got!
  7. On Saturday, my boyfriend was hosting his big end-of-the-semester party. So Friday and Saturday, I did a lot of party prep, including helping him make chili, and then making a big batch of gluten-free, dairy-free brownies.DSCN1032 DSCN1034The original plan for the party was an outdoor barbecue and bonfire, but considering it was high of 42 and snowed all day, the bonfire didn’t work out too well. Still, the party was a hit!–there was still barbecue, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, Dirty Jenga, coloring on the mirror with dry erase markers, Monty Python, and about as many swing dancers and engineers as you can imagine in one medium-sized house.
  8. Listened to a lot of Chicago, my current musical craving.
  9. And started grading my students’ major term paper, which came in on Friday.

Does it feel like spring where you live? (Northern Hemisphere readers)

  1. The weather is the same here in Cleveland. It looks like Spring, green grass, tulips, hyacinths galore and it’s only forty some degrees. I wish it would warm up a little so I can take the baby for walks.

You had a great week and that party sounds like a blast. MarioKart is one of my favorites.

Happy Monday and thanks for linking up.

  2. Ellie says:

It sort of feels like Spring. It’s been wet lately, so I hope the flowers are coming! Have a great week Joyce

That’s what they say about April showers…

  3. Cora says:

Ahh the swing dancing class looks so awesome!! So cool to show us a video. Gosh I need to find one of those classes one day.
Sounds like lots of good fun things in your week. You and your/your bf’s friends know how to party. I rocked at super smash bros. I was always Kirby. Always.

    1. Joyce says:

Kirby, huh? Great choice! You’d have done awesome at our party, then–there was some serious Super Smash Bros!
Swing dance is a big thing. I’ll bet you could find lessons in your area. : )

  4. Emily says:

It definitely feels like spring now again after the snow melted! I can’t wait to look at your ‘Going Hungry’ series. THANK you for constantly sharing your story.
