Summer’s Almost Over

This time of year I almost always start thinking about this song by Cheryl Wheeler.

I always get sad and sentimental at the end of summer and autumn–as Cheryl Wheeler says in the lyrics, “Who could help but welcome autumn and the promise of the winter snow? Still there’s something sweet and wistful as I watch this lovely summer go.”

But in today’s post, I’m deciding not to moan about it all ending or dreading the busyness and stress of grad school life. Instead, I’m going to focus on the things I loved about this summer and the things I’m looking forward to about being back at school.

This summer, I loved reading books for pleasure.DSCN1550When I get back to school, I’m looking forward to writing and getting feedback on my work from my colleagues in the creative nonfiction program.

This summer, I loved not having to pay for food or spend any time cooking.DSCN1764When I get back to school, I’m looking forward to buying and cooking my own food.DSCN1537This summer, I loved meeting new people.

When I get back to school, I’m looking forward to seeing friends in my department and from swing dance.

This summer, I loved having an active job and Rocky Mountain National Park for a front and back yard to go play in.DSCN1795When I get back to school, I’m looking forward to getting back to spin class.

This summer, I loved the abundance of wildlife.DSCN1809When I get back to school, I’m looking forward to late night swing dance trips and runs to Old Chicago afterward.

This summer, I loved the chilly mornings and afternoons in the 80s tops.

When I get back to school, I’m looking forward to a few weeks of hot summer weather. (Cold drinks and breezy dresses!)DSCN1515This summer, I loved having more time to work on my blog and read and comment on others.

When I get back to school, I’m looking forward to having a kitchen and working on new recipes for the blog.DSCN1712 (2)This summer, I loved having weekends free to visit my sweetheart.

When I get back to school, I’m looking forward to my sweetheart having weekends free to come visit me.

This summer, I loved having my family come visit.DSCN1661When I get back to school, I’m looking forward to having cell service so I can call them once in a while.

This summer, I loved having time off from teaching.

When I get back to school, I’m looking forward to building on what I’ve learned from past semesters and having fun with a new batch of freshmen.

And now, at the very end of this post, I will admit to one thing I don’t particularly love about going back to Ft. Collins: traffic.

What was one thing that you loved about summer, and what is one thing you’re looking forward to this coming autumn?

This summer I loved finding a group of girls to run with and experimenting with my blog.
I was just thinking about you and your boyfriend. How did you meet? How long have you been together?

Having folks to run with sounds like a lot of fun. I’m not a runner, as you know, but that’s one of the reasons I really enjoy biking and group fitness over doing my own thing.
My boyfriend and I met through swing dance! He asked me out in January. 🙂

It’s quite cool here now, unusual for August. Of course, now that I’m retired, I don’t have to think about teaching again. Are you coming home before you go back to school? If so, I’ll try to make it there for a visit.

I wish I had time. But no. It’s straight back to school for me.
