Currently: July 2017

I keep meaning to put up a recipe post for all y’all FODMAPers. I’ll have one up soon–promise!

Maybe that can count as the ‘procrastination’ on this ‘Currently’ post.

There are so many good low-FODMAP bloggers out there, though, guys. I’ve discovered a number I didn’t know about since joining Instagram, like The Fat Foodie and Low Fodmapper. Go check ’em out!

In the meantime, here are a few ‘current’ happenings and favorites for me this month.

Currently reading: I finished Rocket Boys by Homer H. Hickam, Jr. about a week ago. It’s the memoir on which the movie October Sky was based. It took me a while to get into the book, but by the end I found it very charming. I’m glad I read it!
I just started Colson Whitehead’s new novel The Underground Railroad that everyone’s been talking up and man, it is hard to read. It’s pretty brutally honest about the cruelties of slave plantations. I think it’s totally necessary to be honest about that time in our nation’s history–not that long ago, in a way. Still, it’s not for the faint of heart.

Currently watching: Nothing. I finished the final season of Downton Abbey, and the Fuzzy Face and I haven’t watched Star Trek in a while. I’m okay with reading for now. πŸ™‚

Current food: Hmmm…hard to say. Definitely fresh fruits and veggies have been hitting the spot, with it being so bananas hot here. I got a honeydew at the grocery store and it’s been so fresh and sweet!I’ve also been enjoying smoothies and hummus with fresh veggies for snacks.

Current drink: Tazo ginger green tea was on sale the other day, and I’ve been drinking it iced every morning with my mid-morning snack/elevensies. So refreshing and cool!Current bane of existence: Insomnia. I’ve been sort of sleeping in spurts every night, waking up every hour or so. I don’t know if it’s the heat or what. One day I ordered a decaf iced mocha at like 4 pm because it sounded good and was awake until like 4 am–lesson learned–but the last couple of nights since then have been rough too. Weird.

Current accomplishment: I got a temp job for the next couple of weeks. Not exciting–cleaning private student apartments–but it’ll pay my rent until I start teaching again at the end of August.

Current non-guilty pleasure: Riding my bicycle! In addition to riding it to and fro for various errands, I’ve been going on lots of rides with the Fort Collins Cycling Club!Thursday night the club went out for pizza afterward at a place I’d never tried. The place had gluten-free–and it was darn good! Definitely going back there again.

Your turn!

To be honest, my confession here, is I don’t read very often anymore, like many adults in our society. I read a lot of articles on Wikipedia, getting on Wikipedia loops, but I’m not sure that counts. I’ve read a couple chapters of a book “Stalking the Wild Asparagus,” a guide on edible plants for foraging, that a friend loaned me. I have read Rocket Boys (though the copy I read had the title October Sky, like the movie based on it, but I’m sure it’s the same book), in 7th grade, nearly 10 years ago. From what I recall it was pretty good, as a teenage aspiring engineer I liked reading a book about teenagers trying to develop rockets, not to mention all the explosions. From what I recall the book goes a lot deeper into the engineering than the movie does, which I liked.
I suppose the current bane of my existence, the past couple days anyway, is some pretty serious back pain I’m experiencing, started a couple days ago. Not sure what caused it, but it might have been sitting hunched over cleaning car parts for too long, or bending over to pick up heavy stuff. Unfortunately it’s not uncommon for me to wreck myself in the process of fixing my car. Hopefully this will pass though, I think I’m best to take it easy for a few days.

    1. Joyce says:

Yeah–I thought it was a really enjoyable book in general, but I thought it would be particularly enjoyable to engineering types.
I’m sorry to hear about your back! Hope you can go easy on it for a little while. Awesome as that car is, you are more important–and in many respects more difficult to fix.

Cleaning student apartments. You know, I think that’s a pretty sweet temp job. I’ve always thought I could actually pick up cleaning as a side job. Don’t always love cleaning my own stuff, but in general I kind of enjoy it. Hope you don’t run into any super nasty surprises…

Currently reading: Hallelujah Anyway by Anne Lamott. I think you mentioned you had read Bird by Bird before?

    1. Joyce says:

Yes–Bird by Bird is a wonderful book! How do you like Hallelujah Anyway? And no, I don’t really mind cleaning that much. I did a lot of it last summer. πŸ˜‰ And as much as I love teaching, I imagine I’ll think fondly of cleaning fridges when I have a stack of 90 student papers to grade.

  3. Kat says:

I’ve been having issues sleeping as well, though mine is due to the heat! I wake up at like, midnight totally sweating and then can’t go back to sleep. It’s been miserable!! Hoping you find some relief from your insomnia soon!

    1. Joyce says:

Oh no! I’m sorry to hear that. I think mine might be due to the heat as well. Same to you–hope you get some relief soon.

  4. Alyssa says:

insomnia is the worst! Hoping it gets better for you friend. Also I love bike rides. That and nature walks are the two things I’m loving lately.

  5. Kaylee says:

Yay for bike rides and pizza and reading. I might be a little late but what did you think of the Downton finale?

Current book: When Breath Becomes Air
Current bane: Intense neck pain that only got worse because of attempts to sleep on the plane
